What to Wear Wednesday: Holiday Parties

It’s that time of the year….yup…the dreaded holiday party time!  Do most people like corporate or other mandatory-fun parties?  I’ve never been a huge fan, but I can imagine that these gatherings may appeal to some social butterfly types (ahem, I think my husband falls in that category).  Whether or not you enjoy these holiday get-togethers you can’t go naked (whoa, awkward) so I’ve compiled a few ensembles fitting for those dressier holiday shindigs.   Each outfit below has a different feel and the main component is available for rent at Rent The Runway so you don’t have to spend a fortune to look super chic!

Gorgeous Garage Door Design

Most people probably don’t give garage doors a second thought or really have an opinion about them, so long as they open and close when we hit the button.  I am not one of those people.  In fact, I have some pretty strong opinions about garage doors.    First, I love a two-car garage, a three-car, even better.  But in a two-car garage I much prefer if it has 2 separate doors, not one large door.  Certainly, the large two-car door has advantages… if you want to park something wide, angle park or push in a boat that wouldn’t fit any way but diagonally.  But aesthetically, I think two separate doors looks better.  I also much prefer when a garage is a side-load, in other words, when you can’t see it from the front of the house.  If it has to be a front facing garage, doors that are attractive and beautiful are of course ideal if your community association allows it.  It’s one of the things I wish I could change about my house, I’d love to have something more appealing than my standard 16 panel contractor grade door to welcome me every day.

There are a million options out there in garage doors these days for every style house in a number of materials.  Doors now come in vinyl, wood, steel, fiberglass, composite and glass-paneled in roll up, swing up, swing out and other various options.  I’ve assembled a collection of great looking garage doors in both single and two-door varieties check back next week when I’ll show a few ways to transform a builder grade door just by adding some strategically-placed hardware.

Christmas Town, USA – Picturesque Places for Visiting and Decorating Inspiration

Welcome back from Thanksgiving! Did everyone rush home to get their holiday decorations up? I didn’t. Maybe over the course of this week it’ll happen. I like pulling holiday inspiration from all over when decking my halls for the holidays. So many different towns across the USA have their own iconic feel and decorate for the holidays in their own special way. Here are a few that make for a fun holiday vacation destination or lend us some picturesque decorating style inspiration.

1. Williamsburg, VA. If you’ve never been to Williamsburg, VA during the holidays, you should go. It can definitely get a little touristy, but classic colonial Christmas quaintness abounds. Copy-cat an iconic Williamsburg wreath, which is refined and yet inexpensive to make. Gather a pre-made evergreen wreath and wire on apples, pineapples, oranges, pheasant feathers or other natural elements.

2. Asheville, NC. Asheville is a classy place year-round and during the holidays they up their game. The famous Biltmore Estate is decorated to the nines and lends a ton of opulent decorating ideas.

3. Nantucket, MA. The annual Nantucket Christmas Stroll is coming this weekend (you can bet it’s too late to find yourself a rental or hotel).  I’d prefer to miss the hub-bub of the stroll and opt for a quieter snowy winter weekend, but no doubt Nantucket does coastal Christmas perfectly.

4. Charleston, SC. Think that sunshine, palm trees and Santa don’t mix?  Think again.  Mixing the charm of the old South with the nostalgia of the holidays results in whimsical and creative ideas for either coastal or traditional decorating.  To get the Charleston Christmas look, work in magnolia garlands, Spanish moss, and glittered seashells.

5. Santa Fe, NM. “Santa” is in the name for crying out loud, so you know they must do Christmas right!  You won’t find cheesy inflatable Santa’s but instead a combination of adobe, southwest architecture, simple luminarias, chili peppers on wreaths and maybe even a cactus with lights!

6. Leavenworth, WA. After living in Germany for a few years I’m a sucker for old-fashioned Bavarian towns and Christmas markets in the streets.  That same feeling is available right here in the U.S. of A.  With the Cascade Mountains in the background, Leavenworth is reminiscent of a perfect little Alpine town.

7. Cape May, NJ. Known for its Victorian architecture, Cape May offers an alternative Coastal Christmas.  As if Victorian wasn’t decorative enough these Jersey residents add more lights, more greenery and more bows to their charming gingerbread houses.

What to Wear Wednesday: Statement Winter Coat

Those of us that live in cold weather climates and who get a lot of wear out of our coats, we often own several. And often they are, well, very neutral in color and safe in style because they usually aren’t cheap and we want them to go with as many of our outfits as possible. While this is very practical, in the drab winter landscape with pasty indoor skin, we inadvertently make ourselves look cold and well… blah. One way to amp up your winter style game is to own at least one statement winter coat. Choose wisely and I bet it’s one thing you’ll get compliments on over and over…. Anyone ever complimented your black puffer jacket? Yeah, didn’t think so. Here’s a selection of statement winter coats that are bound to get noticed!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

DIY Thanksgiving Centerpiece

Last week we talked about Thanksgiving tablescapes.  One of the key elements of many of those gorgeous tables was a glorious centerpiece or floral arrangement, or even several floral moments on one table.  Lots of people are intimidated by arranging flowers.  I get it.  Truthfully it does take a little more finesse than just removing the cellophane and plopping them in a vase.   Understandably, lots of people shy away from DIY’ing it and just call up FTD and order a centerpiece.  While convenient, the problem with this is twofold.  One, they are sooo expensive and two, they never look like they do in the “representative” online photo.  They are usually crammed with cheap greens, foregoing the proper number of expensive flowers that you were supposed to get.  I’ll bet that if you try making your own arrangement once, you may never buy that expensive garbage ever again.  Here’s how you can DIY your Thanksgiving centerpiece!  I made 2 medium and 2 small arrangements, plus a leftover scrap arrangement for just $46 in flowers.  We have a flower wholesaler nearby where one can get virtually any flower, and their prices are pretty reasonable.  If you don’t have a wholesaler open to the public near you, you could do something similar with about 5 bunches of flowers from Costco or the grocery store, it may cost just a few more dollars.  For this arrangement, I picked up a bunch of orange spray roses (those are the mini-ones), a bunch of peach carnations (which, sadly, get a bad rap), a bunch of seeded eucalyptus, and a deep burgundy solidago (i.e. goldenrod).

dsc_0149-2

I already had a few random containers that would work well for a fall centerpiece, a wooden pumpkin, a pumpkin basket and 2 small pedestal candle holders that became vases and my leftovers went in an old Patron tequila bottle (hint – they make great stem vases once you finish with the tequila).

dsc_0152-2

Other supplies I used were 2 containers to fit inside my pumpkins (since they weren’t watertight), garden snips/shears, and a few pieces of oasis floral foam and some clear floral tape.

I started by inserting a good size chunk of oasis into the inside containers and drenching them in water.  Oasis needs to be wet in order to insert the stems into it.  Next each flower stem as you insert it (don’t do them all at once) so that they stand only two or three inches above your container and make the first 5 or so flowers symmetrically placed.  Here you can see that I placed one in the middle and 4 others sideways at each corner of the oasis.

dsc_0162-2

Then add your secondary flower, in this case I kept a lot of greenery on the spray roses, the leaves looked nice and it meant that there was one less green I had to buy.  Alternatively, if you’re using flowers that don’t have nice leaves you can snip in your garden or trim your house plants.

dsc_0158-2

Next I filled in holes with the solidago and the seeded eucalyptus which both had a nice contrast in deep burgundy and soft green.

dsc_0161-2

I still thought there wasn’t enough contrast so I went out in my garden and clipped a few stems of dusty miller which added a nice frosty mint green contrast.

dsc_0164-2

After making the two pumpkin arrangements I noticed that I still had a ton of flowers left, so I took these two small candle holders and made a grid pattern on the top with clear floral tape.  Why the grid, you ask?  This is a trick florists use to keep their arrangements standing in their clear glass vases perfectly.  Without the tape the flowers would flop around and not stay put where you actually wanted them.

dsc_0166-2

I then repeated the process of inserting main flowers first symmetrically around the vase, then adding in secondary flowers, and finally greens. Even after completing these I had a good bit of eucalyptus remaining which I simply stuck in an old Patron bottle with a few feathers.  I haven’t decided how I’m going to display them yet with my set table but here is the group of the 4 flower arrangements completed.  Will you take on the DIY centerpiece challenge?  We’d love to see them.  Add a comment and show us your work!

Thanksgiving Hostess Gifts for under $40

So if you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving or bringing food to a friend or relative’s house you probably feel obligated to show up with something in hand.  And if you don’t want to go with a typical bottle of wine, what might you bring that would be appreciated by the host(ess) that won’t break the bank?  Here’s a roundup of 10 spectacular hostess gifts that are each under $40.  Truthfully, I was targeting gifts under $50, but once I finished assembling all of them, it turns out that the priciest item was just $39.95, so hostess gifts under $40 it is!

Set a Tasteful Thanksgiving Table

The FOOD is where it’s at on Thanksgiving… oh and the family togetherness, sure…. so, with all of that there’s not a lot of Thanksgiving specific decorating going on.  Hell, my neighbors already had Christmas decorations up the day after Halloween.  One easy way to make your home a bit more festive for Thanksgiving in advance of the holiday is to set the table.  If your home is anything like mine your dining room table ends up holding mail, homework, backpacks and maybe a jacket or two slung over the chairs.  Why not make it look pretty, even if just for a week?  You can put out a creative centerpiece, the dishes, napkins, some candles, etc.  Below are some really fantastic Thanksgiving tablescapes that I’ve seen, many with super easy and cheap DIY elements.  Try one out yourself!

This bare wood table gets rustically regal with eggplant napkins, bright orange persimmons, and shiny magnolia leaves.  I love that they mix and matched the black plates with other random dishes for a casual and modern look, so you don’t have to grandma’s full set of china set out, work with what you have.

Navy, white, cornflower blue and orange mini pumpkins crammed down the center of a rustic wood table with more modern looking flatware and plates has informal appeal.  With a bit of craft or spray paint this Country Living look could be accomplished in no time!

Joann, the fabric and crafts company, has a tutorial on how to create this one on their website.  It mixes my fave hot metallic, copper, with gold.  The faux moss mat provides needed contrast for DIY spray painted artichokes and mini gourds.

Leave it to Southern Living to provide a more traditional tablescape, but with the alfresco twist of setting it on the gorgeous front porch.  Complete with formal meets whimsical pumpkin floral centerpieces, amazing tortoiseshell utensils, and quintessentially southern mint julep cups.

If you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving I can see your hesitation for setting an entire table, instead maybe just clear off the junk and place a centerpiece like some of these beauties.

First up are a few flowers-in-pumpkins ideas.

What to Wear Wednesday: Dress the Turkey, Dress the Kids

Last Wednesday we had a few options for ladies for Thanksgiving, this week, here’s a few options for the kids!  I do this because my kids are too old to listen to any advice I have on what they should wear.  They have their own fashion brains, which for both of them could probably best be described as sporty-comfy.  Let’s see if I can predict what they’ll wear on Thanksgiving (I’ll try to snap a pic and post it after Thanksgiving to see if I predicted correctly).  My son will be in Adidas training pants, a Bayern Munich zip up track jacket and sneakers .  My daughter will be in leggings, probably grey or black, a T-shirt and maybe a zip-up turquoise (her favorite color) sweatshirt and sneakers.  Long gone are the days when I can dress them up like little mini-mannequins so instead I’ll style imaginary kids who would never dream of refusing my sage style advice…

For the boys, a comfy sweater (definitely NOT an itchy one) atop a flannel plaid shirt (because flannel never needs ironing, and I’m wary to iron my own shirts let alone a kids shirt).  Star Wars socks serve as a coordinating accessory so there is something that they actually will want to wear.  And those shoes are my favorite!  I am going to see if they make these in adult sizes and maybe I could convince my husband to wear them… or hmm…  I think I can fit into a boy’s size….

For the girls, a comfy dress that can go outside to play before turkey when paired with a cozy puffer vest.  Easy slip on/off suede moccasin boots can accompany this dress or countless future outfits with leggings or jeans.  Why have a hat with one fuzzy pom-pom to pet when you could have this one with two pom-poms?  And the girls love Star Wars too – but we’re keeping it subtle and classy here with the Millenium Falcon necklace.

Hidden Under the Stairs

I am always amazed by people that find creative ways to maximize and make the most out of their homes… especially those that make an otherwise unusable space into something that fits their lifestyle needs.  Lately I have come across some really amazing ways people have used that strange space that is underneath a set of stairs.  The default use for this space, as it is in my home under the lowest set of stairs is a closet.  Sure, it’s useful, but it’s also a bit, well, boring.  Here are a few ideas that could make this space spectacular.

Yes, I suppose this is technically a closet as well, but this is a much better closet that makes the stair wall a focal point with these great glass doors.

Making each stair into  a drawer adds a ton of storage and is completely hidden.

This is also a really attractive way to add drawer storage that looks so clean and put together.

Seasonal, Easy Bedroom Refresh

Do you change out your bedding for winter? I don’t mean adding flannel sheets instead of cotton. I’m talking about totally changing out the look of your bed with a winter comforter or duvet, different pillows, etc. Yeah, I don’t either. But seeing all of the very cozy options that arrive in the holiday catalogs and magazines, got me thinking that changing out the bedding is a pretty easy thing that anyone could do for a quick and cozy update to their bedroom décor. Here’s a bedroom from my portfolio and an option for restyling it for winter.

Nautical Bedroom with colonial furnishings; Fairfax County, VA

This particular bedroom has a coastal sort of feel, so how would I change small things to make it look wintery and warm?  Primary colors in the room are light blue/ aqua, deep warm brown and a sandy tan color.  I’d add a solid, warm tan comforter and shams that have a stitched pattern that reminds me of a cable knit look. Accompany it with some buffalo check plaid and cable pillows, a touch of birch bark in the candles and an accent pillow along with a luxe faux fur throw.  Complete the wintery look with a framed stag print.  Light the fireplace and get cozy (but don’t leave it lit while you sleep because that’s a fire hazard and could potentially set your gorgeous new bedroom ablaze… but you knew that already).
